If you are trying to decide on which material you want for your kitchen countertops, do your research on the qualities of each material you are considering. No matter what you choose, you want your countertop to be attractive, clean, enduring, and resistant to stains, scratches, heat, and water.

  • Stone

Stones, such as granite, limestone, or marble, are amongst the most expensive countertop options but they are known for their appearance and durability. Stone holds up to heat and offers different colors. Stone countertops upgrade kitchens and add high value to homes, but may crack and absorb stains.

  • Tile

Ceramic tile is possibly a dated countertop material, but it remains inexpensive and durable. Tile counters are easy to install, come in different textures, and can handle hot pans. While the tiles themselves are easy to clean, cleaning the grout between the tiles is often difficult. Copper and aluminum tile are newer options and come in smooth or brushed textures. In general, tiles come in various sizes and patterns so you can create interesting designs in your kitchen.

  • Engineered Stone and Solid Surface

Engineered stone has 93 percent quartz particles and comes in a wider variety of colors than natural stone. This man-made stone has a nonporous surface so it resists scratches. However, it is more expensive than stone.  Solid Surface is another manufactured countertop option that’s made of acrylic. It does not have stone’s natural look but does resist moisture, stains, heat, sunlight, and mold and bacteria growth.

  • Concrete

For an industrial look, concrete countertops are both functional and chic. They are made and cast directly in the kitchen and allow for color tinting. Treatments make them less porous and resistant to cracking, scratches, and heat.

  • Stainless Steel

This gives your home kitchen a professional, industrial look. Stainless steel is heat-resistant and easy to clean, but are pricey and are easy to dent.

There are varieties of kitchen countertops you can choose from. There are advantages and disadvantages to each material but the list above reflects choices that bring value to your home and are the most attractive and durable.
